Pioneers On Unium: Cover Design-Chapter 7

Pioneers On Unium, Softcover, and E-Book are now available through LifeRich Publishing. This is my first published Science Fiction Adventure novel and is in the very early stages of a promotional startup. As of this writing, the only artist working on this project is me, and I am not an artist. If anyone out there likes to draw and would like to have your art exposed to a Sword & Planet audience, feel free to have at it.

Greg Vancover

Included below is a description for artists of a scene in chapter seven of Pioneers On Unium that was considered as a book cover idea. If you are interested in having some fun with some fresh material, give this book's description a draw and share your artistic vision with us on one, or all four, Pioneers On Unium, Facebook pages

You are sure to make some new fans.

I own all rights to Pioneers On Unium. Anyone out there in promotions, children's books, comics, calendars, clothing, games, artist, etc,. interested in new fresh content and subject matter I am easy to work with. We all know it is more productive to advance as a team than as an individual.

Pioneers On Unium

Artist Outline For Scene From Chapter Seven

Character Appearance
  • A 24-year-old, about 6' 2", muscular white man.
  • Long brown chestnut hair about the middle of the back length is held in place by a leather headband.
  • Shirtless with long-legged buckskin breeches with fringe down the two outer sides.
  • Feet covered in calf-high moccasins with fringe circling the top.

Action Scene
  • The character is tied to two saplings at the base of a gigantic tree.
  • The man is tied in such a manner that he is in the middle of the two saplings on his knees.
  • Two pieces of grass rope bind one arm to each sapling, with a minimum amount of slack for movement but not enough so he could untie himself.
  • Springing through the air towards the bound man is a waist-high dog-like creature, with bear-like claws and a shaggy brown coat filled with black spots

Story Theme
  • The man is suffering from a poisonous spider bite and is completely delusional.
  • When the dog-like creature springs for him instead of retreating in fear, the fever crazed man launches himself towards the lunging creature, having his teeth as his only weapon and the throat of the beast as his goal.

Description Of Surroundings
  • The incident takes place in good light, but early in the morning.
  • In the background, there is a small smoldering campfire and the man's bow and quiver of arrows, spear, hand ax, canteen, and a leather pouch (all handmade) lay in a pile a few feet away from the campfire.
  • Encircling the small campsite is sharpened stakes drove into the ground, slanting towards the forest.
  • The undergrowth of the area is not dense, but it is colorful.
  • There are no mountains or streams within sight.
  • If you are drawing a cover, the top of the picture must be done in a fashion to allow room for the title, and author's name, to appear without interfering with the main art. See the example provided below.

    Pioneers On Unium: Introduction

I wrote Pioneers On Unium, the first novel of a three-book series, from August 15, 1975, through August 11, 1977. The science-fiction adventure story begins with three friends rescuing a baby during a lake speedboat racing accident. In return one of the boat racers, who is very rich, offered the young men an all-expense-paid vacation at his resort in Puerto Rico, which they accepted.

Greg Vancover, the book's principal character, leaves one week before the other two rescuers because of previous commitments. While flying through the Bermuda Triangle, the passenger plane carrying one hundred thirty-four people on board is captured by a flying saucer. It turns out the alien's home planet is being destroyed by a deadly virus, and the space travelers are hunting for a new home. The aliens have three planets under consideration, so they are in the process of collecting specimens throughout the universe and populating them for experimental purposes.

The passenger plane and occupants are transported to the planet Unium, where they will be closely observed by the aliens but not interfered with. The new pioneers survive against the dangers of an unknown world, which they very soon discover is not Earth. Rescue out of the question, the new pioneers, over time, built a wooden palisade frontier-styled fort to protect them from the local wildlife. Once the primitive village which they named Fort America was completed, the settlers set up their own town government patterned after their USA homeland.

Like all societies, no matter how hard one tries, life is never perfect. Over time, the new pioneers develop petty personal differences and as in any group of people, individuals make unwise decisions that ultimately come back to haunt them very unexpectedly. The story's lead man, Greg Vancover, made an unwise but common decision. The young man had a relationship with two women at the same time. Things quickly spin out of control, and Greg's poor decision-making leads to unforeseeable trouble with the father of one girl, who was very influential in Fort America's decision-making.

This trouble escalates into violence, and Greg soon finds himself on the wrong side of the law. The young man is judged by his peers, which eventually leads to his banishment from Fort America and the beginning of the sequel, Exiled On Unium.

    Pioneers On Unium

I present this story in the vintage science fiction adventure style of my favorite authors, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, Jules Verne, Philip José Farmer, and Michael Resnick to name a few. The story overall is family-friendly, although some mature subjects are touched upon in a suggestive, but undetailed way.

Like C.S. Lewis's fantastic writings, there is a story behind the story. Here, every action causes a reaction. When you make poor decisions, they will eventually come back to haunt you at a later date negatively. The moral of the story is, that if you don't start out right, you will not end up right. Make thoughtful decisions, because they will invariably affect your future.
